The Green Cabinet About Green Energy

Hydro-Electric Power

Hydro-electric power is not something that is brand new. In fact, it is a power source that has been used for thousands of years. Mainly it was used in corn mills to ground corn. Back then, the main idea was that the running water worked to turn the mill wheel. Usually the running water was from the river that was near the mill, which is why these mills were made near the water to start with. The water would allow the power to be carried into the interior of the mill and the job was done. Now today, for those that are wondering just how does hydro-electric power work, they are going to want to picture the olden ways, but on a bigger scale. In fact, hydro electric power is responsible for providing about twenty percent of the world's power.

The way that it works now is through the use of tunnels and dams. Dams are built and they are usually going to be located in an area that already has a lake or some other water source. With the dam in place, the water is going to be forced to flow through tunnels that are under the dam. In the tunnels are turbines and generators that are using the power of the water to turn. Much like the mill wheel turned years ago. With these turbines and generators turning, they are providing a way for magnets to turn around copper coils that are located inside the plant. It is the force of the magnets turning around the copper coils that are producing the electricity that they can then send out to the world to use. And the water is what is powering the magnets and copper to work. For those that are wondering where they can see this in action, they should think of the Hoover Dam which has really brought the use of hydro electric power to the table. At one time, Las Vegas got the majority of its power from the Hoover Dam. Though, now due to the size of the city, they are getting their power from other sources in addition to the Hoover Dam.

So why should hydro-electric power be something that should be considered? Well consider the fact that the hydro-electric power is something that is not going to produce any toxic chemicals like other types of power options. For that reason many people mean that fossil fuels will be a dead end. In addition, it uses a readily available source, water, which means that you are not going to have with other options of power. Are there problems with this source of power? The only problem is that it is going to require that the area build a dam in order to harbor the power. However, this is easily overcome and should not be a factor that keeps states and nations from utilizing this source of power. Those that have embraced the technology are rather surprised as just how easy it is to produce electricity to supply to their communities.
