Biomass Power
Biomass power is the energy generated by the use of plants and biological material, hydrogen, or alcohol fuels. Mostly it refers to plant matter grown especially to produce energy such as electricity and heat. It relies on plants, and organic waste to produce energy. This is usually done through incineration - fire. Some types of plants that are used to produce this type of energy are corn, poplar, sugarcane, eucalyptus, hemp, and many other plant and tree varieties.
One common example of biomass power is the use of a wood stove or a pellet stove to produce heat. Biomass does not influence the content of carbon monoxide in the environment as much as fossil fuels, making it an environmentally friendly solution. The main energy sources for Biomass are wood, alcohol fuels, landfill gases, waste, and garbage. All these can be used to produce energy through biomass. These sources must be processed to be converted in the product that will generate the fuel or energy, for example ethanol or biodiesel, and methane gas or biogas. To harness this energy there are several technologies available. These technologies include biochemical conversion, chemical conversion, and thermal conversion.
One disadvantage to this technology when used as fuel is that is produces air pollution. It expels carbon monoxide into the air, as well as nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. If burned or combusted, carbon dioxide is expel into the air. Another concern is the one of particulates since most companies involved in biomass do not have emission control for particulates installed. However, the particulates emissions seem to be larger and do not seem to pose a risk, although their impact on human health is not known yet. Another concern is that the source for biomass should be clean and not contaminated so it does not affect the air. So there is some air pollution associated with this energy power, however, it is much less damaging and influencing to the environment than fossil fuels.
Biomass is considered a renewable energy source since it can be harvested and it can use dead material and waste as well. One advantage to this technology is that it can produce electrical power, and it can do it any time, unlike the limitations of wind power and solar power. This presents an advantage to the technology.
Another benefit to the use of biomass power is that it reduces municipal wastes, food processing, and animal waste, in addition to reducing the use of landfills, reduce the risk of wildfires when removing small diameter trees, and an improvement on the quality of our water supply by reducing waste. Other benefits include the creation of new jobs for this industry and the retention of the jobs that are necessary for obtaining the biomass material. It also helps the economy by giving farmers the opportunity of growing biomass material such as corn to be used as biofuels.
Biomass technology is diverse and can be utilized for producing biofuels, producing heat and power, and producing chemicals and materials that are bio-based. This versatility and availability makes it one of the best power sources for the present and future.
